New 4×4 Ford Transit for Mountain Rescue

It makes sense for a mountain rescue team to have a four-wheel-drive vehicle.  It was the flexibility of the Ford Transit that won over the volunteers of the Buxton Mountain Rescue Team.

The team’s new Ford Transit, which was handed over by supplying dealer GK Group Chesterfield, will enable the rescuers to get search and rescue personnel closer to where they are required, even in the depths of winter.
“A typical mountain search or rescue can involve quite a number of team members and an enormous amount of kit,” said deputy team leader Malc Needham. “Our old Transit was a lifeline, but this new one is all-wheel-drive and that will be a huge help to us in bad weather, as we experienced in the Peak District last winter.”
Buxton Mountain Rescue Team was called out 116 times last year, typically to bring assistance to walkers who have slipped and twisted or broken an ankle, to help locate missing walkers or tend to mountain-bikers or hang-gliders who have been injured, usually in areas of the National Park which a regular ambulance could not reach.
Malc said: “It took a lot of tin-rattling to raise the money to buy the new minibus. We have been fund-raising like mad, even though Ford and GK Group have given us an excellent deal.
“The Ford Transit Minibus began life as a 15-seater with a 140PS 2.4 TDCi engine, but has had a row of seats removed to facilitate the stowage of equipment and to allow a stretcher case to be carried if necessary. Further conversion work involved the fitment of blue lights and sirens, radio equipment and other emergency-service gear.
Shaun Wood, GK Group’s commercial sales manager, said of the new Transit: “It has been a delight to supply such an out-of-the-ordinary vehicle to the team. The minibus looks great finished in silver and with all the equipment it carries, will be a reassuring presence in the Peak District for years to come. It goes to show that Ford can deliver a vehicle to pretty much any specification that a customer requires.”

TRANSIT AWD JOINS NATIONAL GRID’S FORD FLEET

Ford has reached a new agreement to add Ford Transit all-wheel-drive models to the National Grid’s fleet of over 3,000 Ford vehicles.British Gas Transits

The deal confirms the continued supply of Ford commercial vehicles to the gas and electricity business over the next three years.

One of the world’s biggest utilities, National Grid has been running Ford vehicles for nine years. It has around 900 long- and short-wheelbase Transit Connect models and, evenly split, 2,000 Transit 280s and 350s.

“The new Transit is more refined and car-like,” said National Grid fleet operations manager Gary Foster. “It’s a very diverse range that offers well-proven reliability, with improved ergonomics and driveability.”

A number of Ford Transit LWB 460s have recently been added to the fleet – along with five of the new all-wheel-drive Transit models, in chassis-cab dropside configuration.

“The AWD Transits have recently entered service,” said Gary. “I have tried them off-road in fairly tough conditions, and they performed very well.  The AWD option in the line-up is a great addition for semi-off-road users like National Grid.”

National Grid’s renewed agreement with Ford follows a tendering process that included all European manufacturers covering the utility’s area. National Grid operates the Gas Distribution networks in the central region of England and the Electricity and Gas Transmission systems for the whole of the UK.

Each year its engineers attend 600,000 emergencies and 80,000 gas escapes.  Ford Connects and Transit 280s provide a first-response service for gas-leak calls, and are also used for meter-maintenance. The bigger Transits are used for follow-up work involving excavations, mains replacement and electricity maintenance.

The National Grid vehicles, which are purchased outright, are expected to cover up to 18,000 miles a year.
