SCHOOLS GET SPECIAL DISCOUNT ON FORD TRANSIT
MINIBUSES
Ford dealers across the country are offering state education
facilities such as schools and colleges an additional preferential
discount of up to 17 per cent against the purchase of a Ford Transit
minibus.
The Ford Transit minibus range starts with the nine-seat Shuttle
Bus and includes 12-, 15- and 17-seat minibuses. All models are
designed to carry occupants in a safe, spacious, well-equipped
interior. The Transit provides a car-like ride and handling
experience that is helpful to those who usually drive cars. Standard
safety features on a Ford minibus include ABS, ESP, driver and
passenger airbag on all models with additional latest generation
seatbelts that suit both adults and children on 15- and 17-seat
models.
Steve Kimber, commercial vehicles director, Ford of Britain, sai d:
"The Ford Transit minibus line-up can accommodate everyone from
a chess team to a football team. They appeal to schools for their
reliability and class-leading design. Transit minibuses are easy to
drive and handle which is a major consideration for teachers who
would not normally drive such a large vehicle."
Education establishments looking to take advantage of the latest
Ford School Bus programme should visit their local dealer.
FORD
VANS TOP UK RELIABILITY SURVEY
Ford
has been named as Britain's most reliable van manufacturer in an
authoritative survey of more than one million vehicles.
In a
double success, the Transit was named the most reliable van for the
third year running, with the Transit Connect in third place.
The
annual reliability survey is published by Fleet News
magazine and polls the UK's leading leasing companies, which
together operate over 1,000,000 vehicles.
The leasing and contract hire companies – all running multi marque
fleets – rated vehicles according to breakdowns per 100 of each
model. This year's survey covered a total of 840,000 cars and
183,000 light commercial vehicles.
Steve
Kimber, Ford of Britain commercial vehicle director, said:
"Ford models have led the commercial vehicle market for 44
years. Their reliability record is of paramount importance, so
I'm delighted by this Ford endorsement from top UK fleets."
Ford's
continual investment in its commercial vehicles – much of it at
Dunton technical centre in Essex and at Dagenham where most Transit
diesel engines are built – ensures they continue to offer leading
reliability and cost of ownership.
Stephen
Briers, editor of Fleet News said: “This survey is the
largest of its kind in the country and is based on feedback from
those who really know about the reliability of vehicles – people
who run hundreds of thousands of vehicles over many hundreds of
thousands of miles.”

Judges
at Britain's leading van magazine, What Van?, have recognised Ford's
range of commercial vehicles as winners and leaders in their 2010
awards.
The
top prize for small vans went to the all-new Ford Fiesta Van. What
Van? editor, Neil McIntee, said: " Back with a vengeance,
Ford’s all-new Fiesta Van is the hugely deserving winner of What
Van?’s Small Van of the Year award. No matter which model you opt
for, Fiesta Van is fun to drive. For your money you get responsive
steering with plenty of feedback. The handling is sharp, the
gearchange is slicker than slick and user-friendly and the driving
position is little short of excellent."
Transit
collected the Best Security award for the sixth successive year and
Transit Connect won Best Security for the eighth time. Transit
Minibus triumphed for a fourth consecutive year. Transit
One-Stop-Shop programme and Transit Small Panel Van are both highly
commended, and the new Ford Ranger is highly commended in the 4x4
category.
Commercial
vehicles director for Ford of Britain, Steve Kimber, said:
"This success is a testament to the investment we continue to
make in developing the workhorse vehicles that British businesses

magnificent endorsement."
Fiesta Van ECOnetic
has lowest CO2 in its segment at 98g/km (76.3mpg*) Priced
at £11,635
Ford ECOnetic
line-up now covers Mondeo, Focus, Fiesta, Fiesta Van and Transit
Super-frugal,
stylish and 'green', the new Fiesta Van ECOnetic is now on sale at
£11,635. Compared with the previous-generation, Fiesta Van ECOnetic
will use 35 gallons less fuel in an average year – offering
genuine savings in daily driving.
The new
Fiesta Van ECOnetic proves form can exist with function and
offers the same style that has made the Fiesta the UK's favourite
small car. With lowered suspension, low rolling resistance tyres and
a specially-calibrated Duratorq 1.6-litre TDCi with coated diesel
particulate filter, the Fiesta Van ECOnetic emits an ultra-low
98g/km CO2.
Produced at Ford's
wind-powered engine plant at Dagenham, Essex, the ECOnetic 90PS
1.6-litre Duratorq TDCi produces 10 per cent less CO2 than the
already impressive mainstream TDCi unit and is matched to
aerodynamic improvements to deliver just 98g/km CO2 and a Combined
76.3mpg.*
Steve Kimber,
commercial vehicles director, Ford of Britain, said: "Fiesta
Van has always been popular with fleet operators and that's sure to
develop further with the arrival of the ECOnetic. It makes a
statement as soon as you see it and we know that whilst
professionals are keen to 'go green', it's just as important for
them to leave a good impression with their clients. Pulling up in
this latest Fiesta Van says it all. "New Fiesta Van has already
seen good sales success. Adding the new ECOnetic to the line-up will
build on this. Overall, I expect we will sell around 2,500 Fiesta
Vans a year, aiming to take around 25 per cent of the car-derived
market." he added.

FORD
TRANSIT MINIBUS GETS ALL-WHEEL-DRIVE MANOEUVRABILITY
- Ford
introduces an 'intelligent' all-wheel-drive system to the
15-seat Transit minibus
- No special
driver training required for AWD
- On sale now
priced from £30,720
Ford's
all-wheel-drive (AWD) system is now available on the 15-seat Transit
minibus. The AWD system automatically provides stepless torque flow
to the front wheels when traction loss at the rear is detected. The
AWD system costs an additional £3,995.
The AWD
assists customers who frequently tackle low friction surfaces and
bad weather conditions and is available with the 2.4-litre 140PS
Duratorq TDCi diesel engine equipped with a six-speed manual
transmission. The system is available on the rear-wheel-drive
chassis cab, 15-seat minibus and the Transit panel van range
including Double-Cab-in-Van. Low, medium or high roof and short,
medium or long wheelbase derivatives are available.
Ford of
Britain, commercial vehicles director, Steve
Kimber, said: "We've had tremendous interest in AWD from
construction, roadside assistance and utility companies. On top of
that we know that taxi companies and schools may also benefit from
extra traction in many every-day situations.
"Being
automatic in its operation, means that no special training or
driving techniques are required."
The AWD system
is a mechanical arrangement which operates automatically so
that the driver is not distracted by any manual input. In slippery
conditions the system provides drive to the front wheels to increase
traction and inhibit wheelspin from the rear. Drive is taken off the
transmission main shaft via a helical gear set towards the front
differential. A system of mechanical multiplate clutches combined
with an hydraulic freewheel mechanism feeds power forward when
required.
Standard
ground clearance is also retained as a bulky differential housing is
not needed with this compact and lightweight system. Compared with
the standard rear-wheel-drive Transit, the additional front axle
weight is just 70kg – the rear axle weight is just 10kg
heavier.
FORD
BEGINS TRANSIT CONNECT PRODUCTION AT ITS NEW PLANT IN CRAIOVA,
ROMANIA
- First
early production example of the Ford Transit Connect "Made
in Romania" rolls off the assembly line
- Ford
confirms it will also build a second product – a new, small
vehicle
– at Craiova in the near future
- A
small displacement, advanced petrol engine from Ford's
EcoBoost global engine family will also go into production at
Craiova
- Once
fully operational, Craiova will have a production capacity of up
to 300,000 vehicles and 300,000 engines a year
The first
production Transit Connect light commercial vehicle came off the
assembly line today at the new Ford manufacturing plant in Craiova,
Romania.
"Today
marks another step in the evolution of the Craiova Plant, and
demonstrates that we are keeping our promise to transform Craiova
into a state-of-the-art manufacturing facility," said John
Fleming, Chairman and CEO, Ford of Europe.
Mr. Fleming
also confirmed that the second vehicle to be produced in Craiova
after the Transit Connect will be a small car. The new small
car – which is not the Fiesta or the Ka – is scheduled to go
into production in the near future. As announced earlier this
year, Craiova also will build a small displacement, advanced
EcoBoost petrol engine. The exact timing for the start of
production for both products will be announced at a later date.
At full
capacity, Craiova will be able to produce up to 300,000 vehicles and
300,000 engines annually and provide employment for approximately
7,000 people.
The first
Transit Connect off the line was donated to Craiova Municipal
Hospital for use in its work with the local community. The
first commercial shipment of newly-assembled Transit Connects from
Craiova is destined for Ford dealers in Romania. Mid-term,
Ford expects to export the majority of Craiova Transit Connect
production, primarily to Central and Eastern Europe.
"Since
the first day we became the new owner of the plant in March 2008,
our entire team here has been working around the clock to deliver
world-class standards of manufacturing quality and efficiency.
Once the modernization of the plant is completed and we are running
Craiova at full capacity, we will have met our commitment to invest
675 million Euros in this new manufacturing facility," said Mr.
Fleming.
Ford continues
to encourage its existing suppliers to bring business to Romania,
either by using Romanian suppliers or establishing facilities of
their own in the country to support Ford's Craiova operations.
Ford also wants to establish co-operation with new Romanian
suppliers and would like to use as many local services as possible,
provided they meet Ford's corporate standards.
In addition to
working with suppliers, installing new production equipment and
modernizing the facility's infrastructure, much effort has been
invested there in the training of employees. Some Craiova
employees have spent time working in other Ford plants to gain more
knowledge about the Ford Production System, while a significant
number of Ford employees from all over Europe have travelled to
Romania to train different groups of Craiova employees. Over
380 different training courses have been implemented for employees
to date.
"Ford's
history in Romania goes back to the 1930s when we had a sales office
and production plant here. Today, 73 years after production
began at our first factory in this country, we are here today to
open an exciting new chapter in the relationship between Ford and
Romania."
"I hope
this new relationship between Ford and Romania will endure for many
years to come, and benefit Ford, Craiova, Romania and its
people," said Mr. Fleming.

TRANSIT
AWD JOINS NATIONAL GRID'S FORD FLEET
Ford has
reached a new agreement to add Ford Transit all-wheel-drive models
to the National Grid's fleet of over 3,000 Ford vehicles.

The deal
confirms the continued supply of Ford commercial vehicles to the gas
and electricity business over the next three years.
One of the
world's biggest utilities, National Grid has been running Ford
vehicles for nine years. It has around 900 long- and short-wheelbase
Transit Connect models and, evenly split, 2,000 Transit 280s and
350s.
“The
new Transit is more refined and car-like,” said National Grid
fleet operations manager Gary Foster. “It’s a very diverse range
that offers well-proven reliability, with improved ergonomics and
driveability.”
A number of
Ford Transit LWB 460s have recently been added to the fleet –
along with five of the new all-wheel-drive Transit models, in
chassis-cab dropside configuration.
“The AWD
Transits have recently entered service,” said Gary. “I have
tried them off-road in fairly tough conditions, and they performed
very well. The AWD option in the line-up is a great addition
for semi-off-road users like National Grid.”
National
Grid’s renewed agreement with Ford follows a tendering process
that included all European manufacturers covering the utility’s
area. National Grid operates the Gas Distribution networks in the
central region of England and the Electricity and Gas Transmission
systems for the whole of the UK.
Each year its
engineers attend 600,000 emergencies and 80,000 gas escapes.
Ford Connects and Transit 280s provide a first-response service for
gas-leak calls, and are also used for meter-maintenance. The bigger
Transits are used for follow-up work involving excavations, mains
replacement and electricity maintenance.
The National
Grid vehicles, which are purchased outright, are expected to cover
up to 18,000 miles a year.
FORD
TRANSIT EMERGENCY RESPONSE VEHICLES JOIN NORTHERN GAS
Ford has been
selected to provide 134 Transit-based emergency response vehicles
for Northern Gas Networks (NGN). Key to NGN's decision was the
Ford Transit's ability to accommodate on-board power systems.
Each vehicle
is crewed by two engineers and is part of an emergency response and
repair service covering NGN’s 23,000-mile network of gas pipes. To
equip the vehicles for their role, power-conversion systems in the
form of under-floor generators and compressors, power-tools,
workbenches and racking are fitted.
The
Transit order was placed by United Utilities Operations Ltd, which
provides asset management and associated services for NGN. NGN
distributes gas to 2.5 million users across Yorkshire, the
North-East and northern Cumbria.
The emergency
response vehicles are based on Ford Transit 350 medium-wheelbase,
high-roof models, powered by 2.4-litre 140PS diesel engines driving
the rear wheels. Rear-wheel drive is preferred by United
Utilities for onboard power conversions, which NGN requires
primarily to enable road-drilling.
“In this
instance, Transit technology provides the best platform for our
needs,” said Gary Banister, United Utilities’ head of transport
services.
For clear
identification, the Transits are finished in white with red stripes
and liveried with ‘Northern Gas Networks working with United
Utilities’. They are being supplied by Ford complete with vinyl
seating, Thatcham-approved alarms, 70mph speed limiters and
heavy-duty batteries.
Each of the
Ford Transit models is purchased outright and they are expected to
average 20,000 miles a year, with replacement scheduled at around
four years.
Notes to
editors:
- Northern
Gas Networks (NGN) owns all the gas mains in the North East,
Yorkshire and northern Cumbria.
- United
Utilities carry out the day-to-day running of the network on
behalf of NGN.
- The area in
which NGN operates has a population of 6.7m people and the
company pipes gas to 2.4 million homes and businesses.
- The network
consists of 36,000km of gas mains, enough to stretch from Leeds
to Sydney, Australia, and back.

ICONIC FORD TRANSIT
'GOES GREEN' WITH NEW ECONETIC MODEL
Ford's
ECOnetic low CO2 technology is coming to Ford's most popular
commercial vehicle icon, the Ford
Transit. On sale later this year, the new Transit ECOnetic is
based on the front-wheel
drive Transit 280 panel van with short wheelbase and 2.2-litre
115PS Duratorq TDCi engine. Target fuel economy is 39.2mpg*, while
average CO2 emissions are a best in class 189 g/km.
Following the launch of ECOnetic
models in Ford's Fiesta, Focus and Mondeo passenger car ranges, the
company is now committed to continuing this affordable low CO2
approach in the commercial vehicle market. In addition to the new
Transit ECOnetic, an ECOnetic version of its compact workmate, the
Fiesta Van, will also go on sale later this year.
Steve Kimber, commercial vehicles
director, Ford of Britain, said: "We appreciate that our
commercial vehicle customers have a clear interest in saving fuel
and lowering their cost of ownership. At the same time,
environmental friendliness is also growing in importance for them,
and with the new Transit ECOnetic they can achieve both."
Transit ECOnetic – what's
different?
* Optimised rolling resistance tyres
(215/75R16) and low friction oil * Green shift indicator light *
Modified engine calibration * Standard 70mph speed limiter *
Improvements over the standard 115PS 280S of 24 g/km CO2 * New
low-drag wheel covers
Available as an option, a
closed-loop, coated Diesel Particulate Filter (cDPF) enables Transit
ECOnetic to satisfy the Euro Stage V emissions standards. The 115PS
engine reaches its peak power at 3,500rpm, and delivers a maximum
torque figure of 300Nm at 1,800 to 2,000rpm.
The Transit ECOnetic features the
Durashift six-speed manual transmission (VMT-6). This offers a wider
range of available gear ratios over the prior Durashift five-speed
transmission, allowing better fuel economy at all speeds, while the
power and torque upgrade offers rewarding performance on demand. The
'shorter' gearing in first gear allows for improved pull-away
performance, while the 'longer' gearing in top provides improved
highway fuel economy (around 10 per cent better compared with the
combined NEDC figures), with reduced engine revs for a range of
speeds and loads for the standard Transit configuration. For the
ECOnetic version, longer gearing has been achieved through the
fitment of a 4.36 final drive ratio.
Standard on Transit ECOnetic is
Ford's Electronic Stability Program (ESP) system, including Hill
Launch Assist (HLA). It also has a generous array of standard
equipment, including the Ford Audio 6000 unit as well as load box
safety equipment, including a full steel bulkhead and solid tie down
hooks. Additional features, such as a trip computer (to monitor fuel
performance), rear parking sensors and a new rear view camera with
overhead seven-inch colour display, can also be ordered.
The Transit ECOnetic is as practical
as any Transit. It offers 1,097kg gross payload (the standard
Transit 280S van is 1,092kg), and the same load box volume of 6.5
cubic metres – using the SAE method of volume calculations.
Detail engineering for the Transit
ECOnetic included reducing the availability of the heaviest options
such as a second sliding door. However, all standard and optional
safety and comfort features are available.

FORD
VAN SHARE HITS EIGHT-YEAR HIGH
Ford's share of the UK commercial
vehicle market in March has set a new record. The 10,136 Ford vans
sold last month constitute a 28.8 per cent share of the market.
This result is the highest since
November 2000 when Ford took 30.4 per cent of the market, and means
that Ford has grown its market leadership position in March,
traditionally the biggest sales month of the year. The overall
market for CVs was down over 40 per cent.
Steve Kimber, commercial vehicles
director, Ford of Britain said: "The sales results mean that
one in every three commercial vehicles sold in March was a Ford. It
is further proof that, especially in the current climate, operating
costs are at the fore of everyone's mind. The Ford CV line-up is
what business operators are looking for: reliability, low cost of
ownership and the ability to get the job done."

MAYOR HANDS OVER NEW
FORD TRANSIT MINIBUSES FOR 'RING & RIDE' IN WOLVERHAMPTON
The Mayor of Wolverhamtpon, Cllr
Christine Mills, unveiled seven newly converted Ford Transit
minibuses this week for the West Midlands 'Ring & Ride' service.
Ring & Ride provides a free
door-to-door, minibus service for people of all ages who find it
difficult to use ordinary public transport. Ring & Ride also
undertakes many trips to and from schools for children with
disabilities, and has over the years become a regular sight on the
region's roads.
The 9,500 users of the Ring &
Ride service will now enjoy more comfort and convenience with
electronic tail lifts, folding steps and up to four wheelchair
passengers travelling at the same time. The Ring & Ride fleet
has 316 adapted vehicles available to its customers.
Chris Rogers, sales manager at Evans
Halshaw, Wolverhampton, said: "We tendered for this Ring &
Ride deal and it is fantastic to see it come to fruition. It is the
first time they have used Transit minibuses and positive driver
feedback was a key part of the decision making process. With the
backing of our in-house contract hire division, we were able to
provide a monthly fixed cost including service and
maintenance."
Steve Kimber, commercial vehicles
director, Ford of Britain, said: "The Ford commercial vehicle
network is the backbone of our operation.
Customers like Ring & Ride can
see the strengths of a 'one-stop-shop' dealer who attends to every
aspect of their needs: from prices and conversions to offering local
servicing and maintenance. This approach demonstrates how good
dealer service combined with a great product can benefit everyone in
the community."
NEW FORD PROGRAMME TO HELP SCHOOLS
GET THE BEST TRANSIT MINIBUS DEAL
Ford has introduced a new programme
that means state education facilities such as schools and colleges
can get a preferential discount of up to 14 per cent when they buy a
Ford Transit minibus.
The Transit minibus range starts with
the nine-seat Shuttle bus and includes 12-,15- and 17-seat
minibuses. All models are designed to carry everyone in a light,
spacious, well-equipped interior. The superb driving experience
gives car-like ride and handling. Standard safety features on a Ford
minibus include ABS, ESP, driver and passenger airbag on all models
with additional generation seatbelts that suit adults and children
on 15- and 17-seat models.
Steve Kimber, commercial vehicles
director, Ford of Britain, said: "Transit is a durable vehicle
which is essential for instance when you need to get a sports team
to matches on time. The safety and design features in Transit
minibuses include car-rated seatbelt safety, electronic stability
programme, ABS and dependability that leads its class."
Education establishments looking to
take advantage of the latest Ford School Bus programme should visit
their local dealer, found via www.ford.co.uk, to find out how much
they can save.
2009 FORD TRANSIT IS STILL THE
BEST WORK MATE: COSTS LESS NOW THAN IN 1995
Ford's Transit
van defies all cost of living trends and costs less now than it did
in 1995. The 2009 short wheelbase Ford Transit model not only costs
less today but also includes safety and electronic features that
were options on a 1995 Transit, creating a fabulous value for money
package.
The 1995 base
model, short wheelbase Transit with a 900kg payload started out at
£12,270, equivalent to £17,001.95 using the latest 2007 retail
price index figures. A similar 2009 Transit model costs £14,920.
Also, to specify the 1995 model up to today's standard model you
would have had to spend a further £3,860 on optional extras.
Apart from a
2009 base model coming with features such as air bags, ABS and power
steering, today's Transit is more powerful, more comfortable, more
economical and greener too. Ford Transit has been at the forefront
of many safety developments and today features ESP, ABS, driver's
air bag and steel bulkhead as standard.
Steve Kimber,
commercial vehicles director, Ford of Britain said: "A loaf of
bread cost seven pence in 1995, today it is more than 17 times
dearer. With vans, customer expectations in terms of driver comfort
and safety have risen considerably since 1995 but the price hasn't.
I can't think of a better value proposition for a van that is still
the best business partner you can buy."

PRICES ANNOUNCED FOR NEW FORD
TRANSIT CHASSIS DOUBLE CAB UTILITY
On-the-road prices for the new
Ford Transit chassis double cab Utility will start at £21,876 which
includes converting a regular Transit Chassis Double Cab into the
new 'Utility'.
The Transit Chassis Double Cab
Utility has been introduced as a Special Vehicle Option (SVO)
featuring unglazed second row cab doors with the rear seats removed.
An additional option, available via dealers priced at £247, means
customers can also combine this new style of cab with a panel van
bulkhead to form a secure load area for valued equipment.
Consequently, a bed-mounted box is not required which would
otherwise take up load space, add weight and thereby reduce payload.
A new standard feature on the Transit
Chassis Double Cab Utility is the shift indicator light (SIL).
Located in the instrument cluster, it illuminates for a short period
at the optimum time to change to a higher gear. This can improve
fuel economy, reduce CO2 emissions and decrease wear on engine and
transmission components. It does not illuminate during periods of
high acceleration, braking or when the clutch pedal is depressed. A
Thatcham approved Category 1 alarm is also now available as an
option priced at £175 on all Transit chassis double cabs.
Steve Kimber, commercial vehicles
director, Ford of Britain, said: "We know load security is a
big issue for all our customers. The new Transit Utility addresses
those concerns. Transit is Britain's best-selling van and by
creating bespoke vehicles through our One Stop Shop programme we can
cater for thousands of different types of business. Transit's
dependability and robustness is the reason we can create vans that
are effective business solutions."
FORD TRANSIT STARTS NEW YEAR WITH
MOTORHOME AWARD
Ford Transit has won its first award
for 2009. For the second year running, Transit was judged the best
base vehicle by Motorcaravan Motorhome Monthly (MMM) magazine.
As the Base Vehicle of the Year for
2009, the judges said Transit engines offered plenty of torque and
load-pulling capacity, and the twin rear wheel versions were
rock-solid on the road. They also said consumer confidence in Ford’s
reliability and dealer network for servicing and warranty work
remained strong, while optional items like steering wheel mounted
cruise control and audio buttons made driving much more pleasant.
Steve Kimber, commercial vehicles
director, Ford of Britain, said: "It is pleasing to hear again
that Transit is the backbone of Britain. Seeing MMM consumers rating
our dealer network highly is a testament to the product and the
staff who make Transit ownership experience the best."
FORD TRANSIT DRIVES COVENTRY MAN
ON THE ULTIMATE TRIP TO ROME
Coventry man, Ricky Fincher, 'struck
gold' in September when he test drove a short wheelbase Ford Transit
at his local dealership, Paynes of Hinckley. He and five relatives
are now off to the UEFA Champions League Final in Rome in May.
The prize means they will spend one
night in Milan before being chauffeured to Rome in a
top-of-the-range Transit Tourneo. They will watch the final before
flying back to the UK the following day.
With four British teams in the
knockout stages, Manchester United, Chelsea, Arsenal and Liverpool,
there's a great chance that the winners will be watching a 'home'
team in the final.
Ricky said:"I'll be taking close
family with me as this turned out to be more diplomatic than trying
to select five mates. I can't wait, it's the trip of a
lifetime!"
FORD TRANSIT DRIVES INTO 2009 WITH
MANY MORE OPTIONS
A host of new options are now
available for businesses to help them continue to use Ford Transit
as the backbone of Britain.
Transit Double Cab Utility Chassis
has been introduced as a Special Vehicle Option (SVO) featuring
unglazed second row cab doors with the rear seats removed. An
additional option means customers can also combine this new style of
cab with a panel van bulkhead to form a secure load area for valued
equipment. Consequently, a bed-mounted box is not required which
would add weight, take up load space and reduce payload. The
'Utility' will be available to order next spring, prices will be
announced nearer the on-sale date.
For the growing number of businesses
requiring dual usage from their vehicles to move both crews and
equipment, the Transit Double Cab-in-Van (DCIV) range provides the
answer. A new front wheel drive, medium wheelbase, low roof model
comes with a choice of three 2.2-litre TDCi powertrains – 85PS,
115PS, 140PS. With a GVM of 2800kg and a payload of 903kg to 915kg.
It is on sale now, priced from £17,420.
The eight- and nine-seat Transit
Tourneo is now available with a light tint glass option priced at
£80.00 to cater for the private hire operators who need tinted
windows to gain local authority approvals to operate their taxi
business.
A new standard fitting on all diesel
engine Transits is the shift indicator light (SIL). Located in the
instrument cluster, it illuminates for a short period at the optimum
time to change to a higher gear. This can improve fuel economy,
reduce CO2 emissions and decrease wear on engine and transmission
components. It does not illuminate during periods of high
acceleration, braking or when the clutch pedal is depressed.
A Thatcham approved Category 1 alarm
is now available as an option priced at £175.00 on all Transit
double chassis cabs.
Steve Kimber, commercial vehicles
director, Ford of Britain, said: "We are always looking to
build on Transit core values of cost, economy and durability. Large
and small companies alike are always looking for security options, a
good environment for the driver and a vehicle that is bespoke for
their needs. Listening to those requests for new options creates the
strength of Transit and its siblings."
SECURITY FIRM SELECTS
FORD
Ford Focus or Ford Transit Connect?
That's the choice available to engineers working for alarm and CCTV
installer John Moore Security as the company updates the fleet of 30
Focus estates its engineers have used for the past three years.
As a result of the new policy, 12
Ford Transit Connects are being added to the fleet, as well as 12
Ford Focus replacement cars.
“The original arrangement to use
Ford was definitely a good deal for us,” says managing director
John Moore. His Hull-based company supplies electronic security
systems, including intruder and fire alarms and CCTV, to Yorkshire
and Humberside businesses, and employs 65 staff.
“We wanted to stay with Ford, but
to give our installation and service engineers the choice between
Focus estates and Connects,” says John. “The Ford van offered
reasonable value compared with others and had more space.”
“Some drivers who have their own
private cars opted for vans for the tax reductions, and because we’re
now installing more CCTV systems than intruder alarms, this also
enables them to carry bulky loads in a single site visit when
required.”
The short-wheelbase Ford Transit
Connect L200 90 PS diesel vans, like the Ford Focus 1.6-litre LX
TDCi estate cars, are fitted with roof-bars for ladders, and
finished in black with the company's distinctive new livery.
The vehicles, supplied by car and
commercial vehicle specialist Automotive Finance & Leasing (AFL)
Ltd of Harrogate, will average 25,000 miles a year over their
three-year contract periods.
The company reported four per cent
savings on its fuel bills when it started using the Focus estates,
and will make further savings with the Connect and the new Focus.
AFL managing director Martin Buck
adds: “John’s choice of Ford Focus and Transit Connect diesel
was based on economics and trust, with reliability and low
whole-life costs being prime considerations and, of course, Ford is
a trusted brand.
“The company considered two brands
in reviewing the fleet, but the Focus and Transit Connect came out
top on all counts.”
FORD GEAR-SHIFT
INDICATOR HELPS FUEL ECONOMY
The latest Ford ECOnetic and Transit
models light the way towards improved fuel economy via a 'smart'
gear change alert.
The gear-shift indicator in the
instrument cluster of Ford Fiesta, Focus, Mondeo ECOnetic and
Transit diesels signals to drivers when to change gear at the
optimum moment. Moving more swiftly through the gears reduces fuel
consumption by avoiding unnecessarily high engine speed.
The system not only helps drivers cut
fuel costs, but also enables them to reduce CO2 emissions and to
decrease wear on engine and transmission components.
Tim Winstanley, Ford diesel
powertrain manager, said: “Many drivers could improve their fuel
economy significantly by changing gear earlier. The indicator
provides drivers with a helpful aid to using less fuel and
encourages a smoother driving style.”
A shift indicator is fitted as
standard to the Ford Fiesta ECOnetic and Mondeo ECOnetic models, and
will be added to the Ford Focus ECOnetic in early 2009. The feature
is also on all Ford Transit and Transit Connect TDCi diesels.
The gear-shift indicator senses the
way the vehicle is being driven, taking account of road gradient,
vehicle load and individual driving style and identifies the most
suitable gear change point.
The system continuously monitors data
from the vehicle including engine speed, road speed, gear selected
and throttle position to calculate optimum gear changes.
Using the gear-shift indicator helps
drivers to maximise the fuel economy of Ford models, which are
already among the most fuel efficient in their class. The Ford
Fiesta ECOnetic achieves a combined fuel consumption of 76.3 mpg*
along with an ultra-low 98g/km CO2, making it exempt from UK road
tax.
This year Ford ran a nation-wide
Smart Driving Challenge using Focus ECOnetics to promote techniques
including early gear changes. Fuel saved after deploying eco driving
tips equated to £325 per year for the average motorist, with
drivers improving their miles per gallon by over a third.
*Note: Fuel economy figures quoted
are based on the European Fuel Economy Directive EU 80/1268/EEC and
will differ from fuel economy drive cycle results in other regions
of the world

Ford has
repeated a trio of significant awards from leading trade magazine,
Fleet News. The Ford Transit, promoted as "the backbone of
Britain", has come top of an industry reliability survey based
on more than 150,000 commercial vehicles. With an additional
runner-up award for the Ford Transit Connect, Ford took the title as
the Most Reliable Manufacturer.
Steve Kimber,
commercial vehicles director, Ford of Britain, said: "It is
fantastic to see British businesses giving recognition to the vans
that get the job done. Transit and its sibling, Connect, deliver a
great ownership experience due to their low running costs,
durability and reliability."
The survey,
conducted by Fleet News (the UK’s leading trade magazine for
company car operators), is based on feedback from multitudes of
fleet vehicles and is the largest survey of its kind in the world.
UNIQUE MOJO FORD TRANSIT SEATS TO
BE AUCTIONED FOR WAR CHILD
Priceless Seating for the Dedicated Music Fan
Two unique
Ford Transit seats, designed for Mojo music magazine's 2008 Honours
List awards event and autographed by an impressive collection of
music industry stars including Duffy, John Martyn, Paul Weller and
Phil Collins will be auctioned in the run up to Christmas 2008, with
all proceeds going to the War Child charity.
Music fans,
autograph hunters and collectors of Ford Transit memorabilia in
Britain can bid to own one of these elegant pieces of furniture in
online auctions on the well-known Ebay website (www.ebay.co.uk).
Each seat will be listed individually and the listings will "go
live" for a period of ten days from Saturday, December 6.
The two
leather-wrapped Ford Transit driver's seats were created for the
2008 Mojo Honours List awards event in June 2008, and were signed by
a host of stars and celebrities who attended the music industry bash
in London. All proceeds from the sale of the seats will be passed to
War Child, the charity supported by Mojo Magazine at the annual
awards event.
"The Ford
Transit has played a unique role in music culture by being the one
vehicle that nearly all new bands start touring in, and that so many
roadies rely on to carry all of their gear," said Ian Slater,
Vice President of Communications and Public Affairs for Ford of
Europe. "It is entirely fitting that Ford says thank you
to the music business in this way as it is one of the industries
that has contributed so much to the Transit's colourful 43-year
history!"
"Above all, we're delighted to be associated with the Mojo
magazine Honours List awards in this unique way, and to help raise
funds for a special charity like War Child," Slater added.
Priceless
Two grey leather Transit seats were taken straight from the
production line and built into a contemporary frame for everyday use
that would look at home in any modern office or living room.
The headrest on each seat carries an embossed Mojo Honours List
logo, and the seats recline exactly as they would when fitted in a
Transit. Discreet Ford Transit logos are carried on the sides
of the aluminium frame.
But the main attraction that makes these seats virtually
priceless is not the seats themselves, but the signatures carried on
the cushions.
Music legends attending the Mojo Honours List 2008 event were
asked to sign the seats especially for the charity auction. Each
seat will be auctioned individually, and each has its own collection
of autographs.
Among the stars who signed one or both seats were singer Duffy,
who won the Mojo Song of the Year, Nick Cave, who scooped the Best
Album category supported by Ford Transit, Judy Collins who won the
Mojo Special Award, and Phil Collins of Genesis who were honoured
with a Mojo Lifetime Achievement award.
Other signatures on the seats include Motorhead frontman Lemmy,
John Martyn, Rat Scabies, Paul Weller, Edwyn Collins, Phil Jupitus,
Sandie Shaw, Seasick Steve, and Dave Edmunds.
The timing of the online auction should allow the winning bidders
to receive their trophies before Christmas 2008. They will be
delivered, appropriately, in a Ford Transit.
Mojo and War Child
War Child was the charity supported by Mojo magazine via the 2008
Mojo Honours List event which presented 21 awards to a hugely
diverse group of music legends in front of 500 invited guests from
the industry. (http://blog.mojo4music.com/honours2008/)
"War Child was the charity of choice for Mojo because music
has always been an important part of the organisation's work,"
said Phil Alexander, Mojo Editor in Chief. "With the help of
the Ford Transit and our other Honours List partners we're delighted
to be able to raise a significant amount for War Child to support
their efforts, which include a pioneering music therapy programme in
Bosnia."
War Child works with children affected by war in
Iraq, Afghanistan, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda. The
charity works with children who have been hit hardest by the joint
forces of poverty, conflict and social exclusion. Their
groundbreaking work with former child soldiers, street children and
children in prison has supported and helped thousands who would
otherwise not have been able to reintegrate with their community,
gain access to education or enjoy sustainable livelihood support. (www.warchild.org.uk).
FORD VANS RETAIN FLEET INDUSTRY
CROWN FOR 14TH YEAR
- Ford vans
rewarded for best reliability and low running costs
- Ford
Transit awarded Fleet Panel Van of the Year for the 14th
successive year
- Transit
Connect wins Fleet Light Van for the sixth successive year
Fleet insiders
at the Association of Car Fleet Operators (ACFO) have once again
given
their top commercial vehicle award to Transit and Transit Connect.
Ford Transit was awarded Fleet Panel Van of the Year for the
14th successive year and Transit Connect won Fleet Light Van for the
sixth successive year.
ACFO
represents professional businesses running vehicle fleets across the
UK. Members have a wealth of knowledge about which cars and vans can
give them the reliability and low running costs imperative to good
fleet management.
Ford’s
director of fleet operations, Kevin Griffin, said: "Claiming
the ACFO title for the 14th consecutive year is testament to Ford's
understanding of the van business and our laser focus on
reliability, cost and service support."
Ford introduces four-day
week for Transit Van as vehicle demand drops
Ford
has cut back on production as the financial crisis engulfing the
continent intensifies.
In
Britain the move will mean workers producing the Ford Transit van
will work a four-day week until the end of the year.
This
will mean 17 days less production at its factory in Southampton,
while work is also being cut at the company's car plants across
Europe.
Ford
is following the lead of a number of carmakers, who have dropped
shifts in response to the growing financial crisis of recent weeks.
In the UK they include Toyota, Jaguar and Land Rover.
The
cutbacks come as carmakers fear being left with huge stockpiles of
unsold cars. Production of private and commercial vehicles over the
first eight months of the year is up 5.2% on the same period as last
year. But at the same time demand has slumped with new car
registration figures in August plummeting to their lowest level
since 1966.
The
industry is bracing itself for yet more bad news when September's
sales figures are announced next week.
Ford quick off the mark with new
Fiesta van
Ford has wasted no time in developing
a van derivative of the well-received new Fiesta hatchback. The new
van will provide strong competition for the Vauxhall Corsavan and
Peugeot 207 van.
It will “probably be launched
commercially in the first quarter of 2009 in Germany”, said
Bernhard Mattes, Ford of Europe’s customer service vice-president.
It offers a load-carrying capacity of around 1 cubic metre, “that’s
plenty of space to accommodate high expectations!” Mattes added.
It’s also very clean, with CO2
emissions of just 110g/km, and a claimed fuel economy of 67.3mpg
from the smaller of the two Durqtorq TDCi turbodiesel engines on
offer – a choice of 68PS 1.4-litre engine or 90PS 1.6 is
available, as well as an 82PS, 1.25-litre 16v Duratec petrol engine.
New Fiesta is less boxy than the old
model, but this has not compromised the interior load dimensions of
the new van. Load length is 1,292mm; maximum width is 1,278mm and
height is 936mm. The critical between-the-wheel arches dimension is
1,004mm. The load are is separated from the driver’s cab by a
half-height bulkhead.
The advanced drivetrain technology of
the new Fiesta car is transferred across, including electric power
steering and electronic brakeforce distribution with emergency brake
assist. Other features include optional side airbags and a knee
airbag for the driver, and the Ford EasyFuel capless refueling
system that stops absent-minded drivers from filling up with the
wrong fuel.
Mattes believes the new Fiesta will
help Ford ride out tough European market conditions. Strong sales of
the Transit resulted in a sales increase throughout the 19 main
European markets – including Russia and Turkey - of 1.756 units to
180,000 units, giving Ford a LCV market share of 9.8 percent in
Europe. The UK remains Ford’s biggest van market – 50,700 vans
were sold in Britain in the first six months of the year. “Despite
the occasionally difficult market situation, we are accelerating our
efforts,” Mattes said.

in no doubt that there is strong showroom demand. It looks great and
we anticipate it will be just as popular as its big brother, the
Transit SportVan, which has been a fast seller.
"The SportVan is all about style
and individuality. It’s for people who want to be a bit different
– and there's plenty of our customers who feel that way," he
added.
The Transit Connect SportVan has an
array of additional exterior and interior styling features over and

FORD TRANSIT CONNECT STANDS THE
TEST OF TIME
Dedicated small commercial vehicle
Excellent residual values Still winning impressive industry awards
The Ford Transit Connect has enjoyed six years of success as
Britain's only light van that is built from the start as a
commercial vehicle rather than a car. More than 8,000 Connects have
been sold so far in 2008.
Steve Kimber, commercial vehicles
director, Ford of Britain, said: "We know from recent research
that our customers want a van that reflects their business and a
professional image. This is exactly why they buy Transit Connect.
Such exceptional levels of ruggedness and durability remain
unparalleled in the small van sector. "
Thanks to Transit Connect’s
exceptionally durable design and construction, service intervals,
repairs and maintenance are kept to a minimum. Transit Connect broke
the mould with new standards of load box functionality and security.
Residual values have always been high and are a strong selling
point.
Sales of Transit Connect split
roughly into one third long wheelbase, two thirds short wheelbase.
The difference between the two models is long wheelbase has 32 per
cent more cubic load space and 14 per cent more load length than its
baby brother.
Transit Connect continues to top the
awards lists. Most recently that includes:
From Fleet World: Van Manufacturer of
the Year (2007). From Fleet News (2007): Most Reliable (van)
Manufacturer Overall, Ford Transit Connect first place for Most
Reliable Model. From What Van?: Best Security, Light Van (Connect
2007 and 2008), Best Light Van (Connect 2007 and 2008). From the
Association of Car Fleet Operators (ACFO): Fleet Light Van of the
Year (Connect 2007 & 2008). From Fleet World: Best Van Range.
Ford Commercial Vehicles also won the Security Award (2008)

MOVEABLE BULKHEAD ADDS
FLEXIBILITY TO FORD TRANSIT CONNECT CREW VAN
Transporting crew and equipment
between sites is a cost effective task with the Ford Transit Connect
Crew Van, and now more flexible thanks to a moveable bulkhead.
Direct feedback from businesses led
Ford to develop the new, moveable bulkhead for Transit Connect Crew
Van. The securing catches allow the bulkhead to be adjusted easily
and quickly to maximize convenience and flexibility.
When required, the easily-adjustable
bulkhead can travel forward on the roof-mounted rails, lock securely
in position behind the folded seats and allow larger loads to be
accommodated with ease. Combine this flexibility with the
class-leading durability, safety and security of the original panel
van, and the Crew Van is a significant addition to the Transit
Connect range.
Steve Kimber, commercial vehicles
director, Ford of Britain said: "Once again, by listening to
our customers, we have developed a valuable addition to the Transit
Connect range. As well as having the credentials of a durable
Transit, the Crew Van is versatile enough to meet constantly
changing demands and get class-leading payload and price."
With a second row of foldable seats,
the Crew Van can carry five (four plus driver) in comfort, with
plenty of room for cargo. Transit Connect Crew Van is available in
both long and short wheelbase models and comes with the same
selection of diesel engines, 1.8-litre TDCi 75PS, 90PS and 110PS.

Steve Kimber, commercial vehicles
director, Ford of Britain, said: "The reaction to the Connect
Sport concept shown at last year's Show, left us in no doubt that
there is a demand for a production version. Just 300 models will be
available when they go on sale this summer and we anticipate the
same interest as we got for its big brother Transit SportVan.
"Transit Connect SportVan is all
about style. Our customers want to stand out from the crowd in a
vehicle that keeps their business moving," he added.
The Transit Connect Sport has an
array of additional exterior and interior styling features over and
above the established Transit Connect, including: full body coloured
bumpers, a bright chrome grille and side skirts, front and rear
sports skid plates, body coloured roof spoiler, silver door mirror
housings and exhaust finisher complete the look. Wheel arch liners
and bodyside mouldings offer protection from minor knocks and dirt
accumulation.

width storage and an overhead centre console. Recognising the high
security needed for goods often carried in the Transit Connect, the
vehicle is equipped with a full bulkhead, remote double locking and
a perimeter alarm as standard features.
The provision of a rear floor mat
helps retain the high level of finish to the floor and is designed
to prevent any cargo from slipping. In terms of safety, front and
side airbags are standard Front fog lamps are also standard as is
the heated windscreen with Ford's Quickclear technology.
Equipped to provide performance and
efficiency The Transit Connect Sport is based on the SWB 220 van and
is fitted with the acclaimed 1.8-litre Duratorq TDCi engine.
Delivering 110 PS, this engine is the most powerful of the three
available to Transit Connect customers, delivering 250 Nm of torque.
The Transit Connect range is now
available with c-DPF (coated Diesel Particulate Filter.) It is
available as an option on two of the three power outputs of the
1.8-litre Duratorq TDCi – the 110 PS and 90 PS. Compliant with
Euro Stage IV regulations, the c-DPF is of a design that
re-generates itself. If normal driving conditions are attained,
there is no need for special servicing or individual attention to be
given to the c-DPF.

Ford Transit
helps British Gas service the UK
New-generation Ford
Transit vans carrying the blue livery of British Gas have gone
into operation with the company, Britain's biggest supplier of
energy and heating breakdown services. Built at Ford's Southampton
plant, the vehicles are the first of an order for 85
short-wheelbase Transit 300 models. Sporting the famous British
Gas flame logo, the vans will be used by service engineers
throughout Britain. Powered by Ford's popular 85PS 2.2-litre TDCi
diesel engines, the low-roof panel vans are speed-limited to
70mph, an energy efficiency measure recommended by road safety
groups. A second Centrica order, for 638 medium-wheelbase Ford
Transit vans is being fulfilled by Ford Southampton at the rate of
30 a week. These Transit 300 medium-roof vans use the 110PS
version of the 2.2-litre diesel engine. Their additional capacity
and payload is required to carry plant and tools for British Gas
central heating installation engineers. British Gas carried out
over 100,000 installations last year and the additional capacity
of the medium-wheelbase Ford Transit will benefit enginee rs
and customers alike. British Gas's fleet support manager, Martin
Lock, said: "The Ford Transit was the best cost option for
our business. It's popular with the engineers and we have a
long-standing relationship with Ford that works well."
Normally the vans are operated by one person and, as a result, a
single passenger seat is fitted, rather than the standard bench
seat. The vans all feature air-conditioning. The medium-wheelbase
vans are finance-leased through Hitachi Capital and the
short-wheelbase models through Lombard. All are supplied on
five-year/60,000-mile contracts. The British Gas Transits are
fitted with Bri-Stor internal racking by CdMP Purfleet. The
short-wheelbase models also carry, in addition, Bri-Stor
roof-mounted ladder-racks. Windsor-based Centrica operates a total
fleet of around 10,000 light commercial vehicles. The new Ford
Transits are replacing vehicles from rival brands as well as
previous-model Transits.
World first for
retrofit hybrid
Connaught Engineering
says its retrofit hybrid system for vans is "the only
commercially viable diesel hybrid system in the world" and
should break-even after 75,000 miles. The firm will launch the
system on its stand 12-458 at the CV Show, fitted to a 2.4m
wheelbase rear wheel drive Ford Transit van. A version for a 2.2m
wheelbase Transit will be available later in the summer.
"Over 100,000 miles, each vehicle will save 10 tonnes of
CO2," says Tony Martindale, chief executive, who expects home
delivery operators to figure highly amongst customers for the
system. "It is architecturally independent, takes about four
hours to fit and involves no changes to the vehicle."
Martindale says the commercial vehicle system is a spin-off from
one developed for use on cars. "This means we know that the
system works reliably."
Ford of Britain says
it plans to continue to showcase its ever-increasing range of
commercial vehicles at the CV Show 2008. With more floor space
than last year, the firm promises that visitors will see recent
news turn into real products on the stand, number 10-330 with a
4.6 tonne Transit, One Stop Shop vehicles, Ranger special editions
and much more.
FORD TRANSIT RANGE CONTINUES TO
DEVELOP
- New six-speed transmission
together with upgraded powertrain
- ESP extends to dual rear wheel
drive and incorporates hill launch assist
- New optional coated diesel
particulate filter (cDPF)
- All models available to order now
Following the announcement of the
most powerful Transit engine (200PS), the largest Transit (4.6
tonne) and a heavy duty series, the Transit range now comes with a
new six-speed transmission, more models with electronic stability
programme (ESP), hill launch assist (HLA) and optional coated diesel
particulate filters.
Steve Kimber, director, commercial
vehicles, Ford of Britain, said: "The Transit range is known
for its diversity and these new additions will give operators more
choice than ever before.
"We were proud to be the first
to make adaptive ESP standard on a van and that roll-out is now
complete with the inclusion of dual rear wheel drive and 17-seat
minibus."
New Six-speed powertrain
All front-wheel-drive Transits are being enhanced with the
introduction of a new 2.2-litre 140PS six-speed power train,
replacing the 130PS five speed model. In addition to the extra gear,
this new powertrain also develops an extra 13 per cent of torque
-350 Nm compared with 310Nm for the previous model. This new
powertrain will be available in Transit SportVan around Spring 2008.
Progress of Load Adaptive
Electronic Stability Programme (ESP)
The inclusion of ESP in Transit continues as planned with dual rear
wheel drive models now being produced with ESP as standard. This
includes Jumbo vans, chassis and chassis double cabs and 17-seat
minibus. In addition, ESP is being upgraded across the range to
include hill launch assist (HLA). This feature uses the ESP system
to help the driver when accelerating from stationary on an incline.
When the driver removes foot pressure from the brake pedal to
accelerate, the system momentarily holds the vehicle to prevent it
rolling backwards.
Coated diesel particulate
filter (cDPF)
Separately available as an option from £850 is a coated diesel
particulate filter (cDPF). This is now available on FWD 2.2-litre
85PS and RWD 2.4-litre 100PS. The latter gains six speed
transmission when cDPFs are specified. For this, two different
technologies are used: front-wheel drive models will be equipped
with a standard diesel oxidization catalyst in conjunction with a
regenerative DPF. Transits with rear- wheel drive come with an
in-exhaust fuel vaporization system that is used to regenerate the
DPF – a Ford-first technology. In addition to this eco-friendly
system, a shift indicator system is being introduced to assist in
driver behaviour and further optimise fuel economy.

PRICES ANNOUNCED FOR
ALL-WHEEL-DRIVE FORD TRANSIT
- Ford introduces an 'intelligent'
all-wheel-drive system to Transit line-up
- Available on Transit with
2.4-litre 140PS Duratorq TDCi diesel engine and six-speed manual
transmission
- All-wheel-drive system increases
traction without affecting ground clearance
- Ideal for utility companies,
hotels, agricultural and forestry companies and police forces
- On sale now priced from £23,495
The new all-wheel-drive (AWD) Ford
Transit is now available priced from £23,495 for the 330 short
wheelbase panel van. The AWD system automatically provides stepless
torque flow to the front wheels when traction loss at the rear is
detected.
This new model is specifically
targeted at customers who frequently face low friction surfaces and
bad weather conditions: the new Transit AWD adds more flexibility
and reliability for operators working in these conditions. The
Transit's AWD system is available with the 2.4-litre 140PS Duratorq
TDCi diesel engine equipped with a six-speed manual transmission.
Steve Kimber, commercial vehicles
director, Ford of Britain, said: "The addition of the AWD
system extends the choice for Transit buyers again, adding extra
confidence when driving over slippery road surfaces. The system's
design helps to reduce friction and mechanical losses often
associated with AWD technology."
The Ford Transit AWD will be offered
above the rear wheel drive on chassis cab, minibuses and the Transit
panel van range including Double-Cab-in-Van. Low, medium or high
roof derivatives will be available and short, medium or long
wheelbase.
The AWD system is purely mechanical
and operates automatically so that the driver is not distracted by
any manual input. In slippery conditions the system simply increases
drive to the front wheels, enhancing the vehicle's overall road
performance. Drive is taken off the transmission main shaft via a
helical gear set towards the front differential. A system of
mechanical multiplate clutches combined with an hydraulic freewheel
mechanism feeds power forward when required.
Standard ground clearance is also
retained as a bulky differential housing is not needed with this
compact and lightweight AWD system. Compared with the standard rear
wheel drive Transit, the additional front axle weight is just 70kg
– the rear axle weight remains virtually unchanged at just 10kg
heavier.
"The all-wheel-drive system is
completely invisible to customers, requiring no driver intervention,
and it doesn't sacrifice any of the vehicle's core commercial
qualities. It greatly expands Transit's capability as it adds more
safety and flexibility to any kind of delivery or transport
usage," added Steve Kimber.

Britain's
best-selling van, the Ford Transit, is now being built with an
'aux-in' socket which allows drivers or passengers to plug their MP3
portable music devices such as iPods through the Ford audio unit.
The socket is positioned
on the passenger side, under the upper dashboard lid. Recent
research shows that the top three music choices for van drivers are
pop (56 per cent); rock (15 per cent) and R&B (10 per cent).
With sales of new
Transit surging in the UK, 60,000 new drivers are set for even
greater driving enjoyment, according to Ford's latest sales
predictions.

FORD TRANSIT EVOLVES AGAIN: NEW
CURTAINSIDES AND TIPPERS READY TO ORDER
- Two new three-way Transit Tipper
models, priced from £21,750
- Two new Transit curtainside
models, available from £22,400
- All models available to order now
- Ford of
Britain's Transit One Stop Shop is now offering four more models
in this key segment of the commercial vehicle market. The bespoke
and flexible nature of the programme maintains Ford's number one
spot; already taking 70 per cent share of this segment to date in
2007.
Transit Single and Double Cab
Three-Way Tipper
Flexibility and quality are the by-words for Ford's new three-way
Transit Tippers. Available in single and double cabs, both models
are rear wheel drive and available with a choice of three 2.4 TDCi
engines: 100PS, 115PS or 140PS.
Class-leading quality starts with the
powder coated, hot dipped galvanised steel body with double-skin
aluminium side and tailboards. The three-way movement is facilitated
by the five-stage, chromium plated ram, mounted in a cast steel
gimbal, in conjunction with configurable ball and socket pivots.
The three-way Tipper features a
unique dash-mounted tipper control module and solid state powerpack
control providing unrivalled functionality, status information and
safety. A bottom-hinged tailboard is fitted as standard. Metallic
and special order paints are included in the Tipper price.
Transit Tippers have proved
particularly popular with local authority fleets and individual
builders alike. The new three-way will increase the appeal and
ability of operators to get the job done effectively.
Transit Curtainside
Three-sides for loading is the unique selling point for the new 350
long (L) and extended frame (EF) Curtainside Transits. The
350L has a load length of 3.6 metres while the 350 EF can take load
lengths of an impressive 4.0 metres. With three sides of the
curtains opening, it's a fork lift truck driver's dream.
The unique feature with the new
Curtainside is the ease of operation when opening and closing the
curtains: a single latch retains each end of the curtains rather
than the traditional multiple straps. The curtains feature
reinforced plastic inserts that reinforce and locate the curtain in
its tracks. An overcab aerodynamic spoiler and 270deg opening rear
doors are standard features.
As with the new Tippers, both models
are rear wheel drive and available with a choice of three 2.4 TDCi
engines: 100PS, 115PS or 140PS. The standard body colour is frozen
white with mid-blue curtains. Alternative colours and livery are
available from the bodywork supplier at extra cost.

FORD TRANSIT AND
THE AA PATROL BRITAIN'S ROADS
Ford and the AA, the UK's largest
roadside assistance organisation, have strengthened their
partnership with the announcement that 300 new Ford Transits will be
used by patrols across the country.
Orders for the Ford Transit medium
wheelbase vans have been placed with Ford, and vehicles will be used
by AA patrols to provide roadside assistance to drivers.
Ford of Britain already
offers 12 months AA roadside assistance with all new cars and 36
months cover with commercial vehicles under the Ford Assistance
scheme. The service becomes invaluable in the event of an accident
or breakdown. Around 90 per cent of stranded motorists' vehicles are
fixed at the roadside by the AA.
The first of the 300
Transits was handed over to AA patrolman of the year, Adam Ashmore
by Ford of Britain chairman and managing director, Roelant de Waard.
Roelant said: "We are delighted
to be working with the AA. Ford has supplied the AA with Transits
previously and we are confident our partnership will be stronger
than ever."
David Wallace, director AA Business
Services, said: “Patrols are taking delivery of their new Ford
Transits, which have always been popular. It is a good all-round
vehicle that is easy to drive and offers good working space. We are
delighted to be working with Ford again as it's essential that
patrols drive reliable, well equipped and suitable vehicles to
provide the best service to AA members."

FORD TRANSIT IS THE CHOICE FOR
FARMERS
Ford Transit is the chosen
delivery vehicle for a Peak District farmers' cooperative endorsed
by HRH The Prince of Wales.
Ford Transit, the International Van
of the Year 2007, has been selected by the farmers' co-operative
called "Peak Choice", which is backed by Business in the
Community's Rural Action programme. The cooperative have taken
delivery of a Ford Transit 260 SWB van with refrigeration conversion
in the Derbyshire Peak District.
Initiated by BITC Rural Action, Peak
Choice is a co-operative of local hill farmers who sell premium beef
and lamb through a box scheme that is suited to home delivery or for
selling from the branded Transit van. The branding incorporates a
watercolour by HRH the Prince of Wales.
The web-based business (www.peakchoice.co.uk)
sells direct to consumers and it has received a further boost from
HRH The Prince of Wales. He has funded the purchase of the
refrigerated Ford Transit van for deliveries and for
‘back-of-the-van’ sales.
Chris Larson, National Rural Director
of BITC said: “The Ford Transit provides exactly the right image
for this premium quality meat business and it also provides a great
advertising platform on the road.”
If the Peak Choice scheme is
successful there are plans for similar initiatives in
Northumberland, Dartmoor, North Yorkshire and in a southern National
Park.
Kevin Griffin, Ford Fleet Director,
said: “We are delighted to have played a part in this important
local business initiative. The Ford Transit has once again proved to
be the best van for the job.”

JULY FORD COMMERCIAL VEHICLE SALES
STRONGEST FOR SIX YEARS
Ford commercial vehicles are leading
the company's charge towards next month's 57-plate debut by notching
up the best sales results for six years.
Performing at their strongest since
2001, Ford commercial vehicles include the iconic Southampton-built
Transit – International Van of the Year 2007. In the first seven
months of this year 56,682 CV buyers have chosen new Ford Transit,
Transit Connect, Fiesta van and Ranger pick-up models.
These Ford commercial vehicles have
attracted 14,000 new owners to the brand during their six-year
growth surge. Now one in four new CVs registered are Ford-supplied.
Newly launched Ford Ranger models
will be buoyed by a 23 per cent rise in Ford pick-up sales in the
past year. The company has just recently announced 3.0-litre Double
Cab Thunder and Wildtrak additions to the Ranger line-up.
Ford of Britain chairman and managing
director Roelant de Waard said: "Ford commercial vehicles are
taking a quarter of the country's total commercial vehicle sales to
provide a solid foundation for Ford's overall market leadership in
the UK. Now all eyes are on the arrival of the new '57' number plate
next month and our dealerships are gearing up to satisfy demand for
Ford's award-winning product range."

SPEED-LIMITED TRANSIT LOWERS COSTS
AND EMISSIONS
Ford is showing fleet operators how a
road speed limiter can reduce their carbon footprint. Fitted to the
new Transit the device can make sound business sense, as well as
reducing CO2 emissions.
The company has produced a
performance chart illustrating the effect of driving a cross-section
of Transit models at governed speeds of 60 and 65mph. A road speed
limiter (RSL) – costing £25 - potentially can deliver useful
savings in fuel consumption and carbon dioxide emissions.
On a Transit 260 or 280S 2.2-litre 85PS low-roof van, for example,
driving 10mph below the motorway limit could save more than 19 per
cent on fuel consumption at cruising speeds – alongside a similar
percentage cut in CO2 emissions.
By limiting speeds to 65mph, a saving of more than 10 per cent at
cruising speeds is possible on the same model, again with a
corresponding 10 per cent-plus reduction in CO2 emissions.
On a Transit Jumbo, a cruising speed
saving of almost 13 per cent is achievable by governing top speed at
60mph compared with 70mph.
“Many operators have been asking us about achievable ways of
limiting their impact on the environment as well as reducing
costs,” says Ford’s fleet operations director Kevin Griffin.
“For operations on which maximum motorway speed is not a critical
factor, we believe use of RSLs to be one of the most cost-effective
approaches.”
The factory-fitted Ford Transit road speed limiter is an option on
all diesel models.

Ford Transit Launches Sport Model
The
covers came off the unique new Ford Transit SportVan today at the
Commercial Vehicle Show at the NEC, Birmingham. Famous for her
televised 'race' around the Nürburgring in a Ford Transit,
professional driver, Sabine Scmidtz, was the first to test the new
Transit Sportvan and joined Ford's commercial vehicles director,
Steve Kimber, for the unveiling.
Steve Kimber said: "I think this
stunning new van will appeal to a part of the British market we've
not seriously courted before – the single or small operator.
Transit SportVan is all about style and individuality. It’s for
people who love Transit and want to be a bit different – and
there's plenty of our customers who feel that way!"
The limited edition Transit SportVan
has been created for those who want to make a bold statement. The
additions have been made to the popular 260, short wheelbase, front
wheel drive, 130PS model.
The
exterior comes to life with the unique performance blue paintwork,
Le Mans style white bonnet stripes, twin exhausts, 18-in 'snowflake
pattern' alloy wheels, low profile 235/45 tyres, body colour grille
and front bumper, front and rear spoilers side skirts, extended
wheel; arches and mudflaps all around.
Inside the cab the features are just
as impressive: leather seats, air conditioning, six CD-player with
remote steering column-mounted controls, cruise control, power
windows, power and heated mirrors, leather steering wheel, tinted
glass and leather gearshift knob.
Further standard features include:
power door deadlocks with second key fob, rain-sensing wipers, auto
headlights, front fog lights, passenger airbag and load area
protection kit.
Sabine Scmitdz, one of
the Nürburgring's official 'taxi' drivers, reached international
fame when she challenged BBC Top Gear's Jeremy Clarkson to a time
race around the 'ring' in a Ford Transit.

FORD TRANSIT XXL – PROBABLY THE
LONGEST TRANSIT IN THE WORLD!
Ford of Europe's Commercial Vehicle
development team, based at th e
company's Dunton Technical Centre in the UK, is celebrating the Ford
Transit's status as International Van of the Year 2007, by creating
an unusual one-off special – the Transit XXL.
Transit XXL literally stretches the
Transit Tourneo passenger vehicle to new lengths, and could well be
the longest Ford Transit in the world!
Designed and built by the Transit
team at Dunton as a special project, Transit XXL uses 'off the
shelf' Ford Transit components throughout. It is based on two short
wheel base Transit Tourneo models which have been meticulously
joined together to deliver a bespoke limousine that carries the
driver plus seven passengers in full 'first class' comfort.
Every passenger benefits from a
leather-trimmed, seven-way fully adjustable Transit 'Captain's Seat'
complete with heating, lumbar adjustment and armrest. As you would
expect, legroom and shoulder room are extensive!
This one-off vehicle has been
designed to further demonstrate the Ford Transit's flexibility and
capabilities. It measures 7.4 metres in length and has a wheelbase
of 5.9 metres. This compares to the standard Tourneo length of
almost 4.9 metres and wheelbase of 2.9 metres.
Transit XXL also features four full
sliding doors – two on each side – while the entire vehicle
benefits from privacy glass allowing occupants to be transported in
appropriate anonymity. The four opening side doors of the Transit
XXL are complemented by the fact that it's a right hand drive van.
When used in left hand drive countries, the Transit XXL driver can
stop at the kerbside and be ready quickly to help passengers get in
to or out of the vehicle – something that drivers of long
limousine vehicles understand and appreciate.
The interior also features a fully
fitted carpet made from the standard Tourneo item, and a floor to
roof carpeted bulkhead behind the rearmost pair of seats which
creates a separate luggage compartment accessible only through the
tailgate-style rear door.
Passenger comfort is maximised
through the use of front and rear air conditioning, with the rear
being controlled via the passenger compartment making this literally
the coolest Transit to travel in.
The team isn't finished yet, and has
plans to install a full in-vehicle entertainment system, including
DVD player and games consoles, with individual monitors.
Still a Transit at Heart
Transit XXL is powered by a
completely standard Ford 2.2-litre, 130PS Duratorq TDCi engine,
though the 5-speed gearbox has been specially adapted and tuned for
optimum gearing to deliver enhanced mid-range performance. The
braking system has also been upgraded and uses self-adjusting,
servo-assisted front and rear discs. The body construction for
Transit XXL features extensive strengthening under the floor and in
the roof to ensure that the vehicle is torsionally rigid and safe.
It has an unladen weight of 2500kg. Using an FT350 front wheel drive
model, the suspension has been enhanced to give the necessary gross
vehicle weight of 3500kg, enabling Transit XXL to be fully laden
with passengers and their luggage
Finished in Frozen White, the Transit
XXL retains many of its original standard features, including
satellite navigation, Bluetooth® capability, top-of-the-range Ford
audio equipment, heated front screen and – perhaps most
importantly – reversing sensors.
"The Transit team spent a huge
amount of their personal time putting together the Transit XXL, and
we're delighted with the result," said Barry Gale, Ford of
Europe's Chief Engineer for Commercial Vehicles. "It was a
challenging project but the core vehicle's strengths and flexibility
have helped the end result to be easy to drive and very comfortable
to ride in.
"Ford has a history of building
unusual one-off, fun vehicles that have become legends – the
Transit Supervan series, our World Rally Transit and most recently
the Transit Connect X-Press which used the powertrain of the Focus
RS to create a hugely entertaining vehicle," said Gale.
"Transit XXL takes us in a different direction as we wanted to
show that the refinement of the new Transit allows it to be a
limousine. One thing is for sure – it provokes amazing reactions
from all who see it!"
